Inside Northside Artist Party Is This Week

We're busy getting ready for the "Inside-Northside" magazine cover artist's party at our office this Thursday night, 5:30-7 p.m. We've spiffied up the office a bit and lots of delicious food is being prepared...grilled oysters, BBQ pork, beef tenderloin, and Spanish rice with grilled shrimp most notably. We're excited to have an opportunity to showcase the talent of local artist Elizabeth Brown and invite everyone to come by and have some food and fun.

Gum Disease/Heart Disease Genetic Link Reported on Fox News

An association between periodontitis (gum disease) and heart disease has been known for several years. An actual genetic link between the two diseases has been suspected, but German scientists say they have now positively identified a shared genetic link between the dental disease periodontitis and heart disease. They reported their findings to the European Society of Human Genetics annual meeting in Vienna, Austria, in June.
The scientists identified a specific genetic variation on chromosome 9, previously shown to be associated with heart attack, that was now seen to be associated with the clinical pictures of both diseases. They advised that patients with periodontitis should try to reduce their risk factors and take preventive measures at an early stage. They reiterated the importance of taking periodontitis seriously and diagnosing and treating as early as possible.
Since most people see their dentist more often than they see a cardiologist, dentistry has, in many cases, become the front line of defense against heart disease. Your dental team at MoreSMILES has long been on top of this trend, and here's how we work to help protect your health:
OUR PROTOCOL TO PROTECT YOU FROM HEART DISEASE
At MoreSMILES we have included a detailed perio exam as part of our comprehensive examination of all new patients. This means 6 different measurements are taken on every single tooth to determine the depths of pockets between the gums and the tooth. The lower the number of the depth measurement, the healthier the gum tissue. A measurement of 4 or more millimeters requires further attention and possible treatment.
At subsequent periodic check-up visits, we recheck and confirm the perio conditions using an abbreviated method of perio exam, noting any changes that have taken place. Furthermore, we recommend repeating the detailed comprehensive exam for existing patients every three years.

Fox News Features CEREC Technology

I was just having my Saturday morning coffee when I happened upon a Fox News feature on CEREC dental technology. Since we've been using the CEREC since 2005, I paid close attention to see what they had to say. According to their report, there are 10,000 dentists in the U.S. using the technology.
The benefits to the patient are that a crown, veneers, bridgework can be completed in a single visit, saving the patient the inconvenience and discomfort of having to submit to goopy impressions and return for a second visit several weeks later to deliver the completed porcelain restoration.
With CEREC, the impressions are taken digitally so there's no putty impression material. The restoration is designed and created at chairside with CAD-CAM computer technology and then milled from a solid porcelain block while the patient waits (less than an hour).
Fox News did a good service for dental patients everywhere, except that they gave an erroneous website for finding a CEREC dentist. But, look no further, if you are reading this, you have found a CEREC dentist! Good job, Fox News.
