Dr. Ryan Staehling Joins MoreSMILES Team

Welcome to Ryan K. Staehling, D.D.S., our newest MoreSMILES team member. Dr. Staehling is a native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and his wife is from Houma. They met at LSU where both were earning undergraduate degrees. Dr. Staehling has served in the Louisiana National Guard and helped in the post-Katrina relief efforts at the Louisiana Superdome and the Convention Center. Dr. Staehling has already proven to be a valuable member of our team by stepping in to handle emergency calls while Dr. Moreau is away this week. While building his practice on the Northshore, Dr. Staehling will be participating in-network with some dental plans. Call Jessica to inquire about your coverage.

What's in your mouth?

I heard someone on TV say today, "Knowing is the first step to healing." This is very true, particularly with periodontal disease. Sounds like a very boring topic, huh? But statistics show that about 80% of the adult population have some level of periodontal disease. Most are probably not even aware. Trust me, the people in their lives every day may be able to tell that something is not quite right by the distinctive odor that is detectable during casual conversation...persistent, pungunt bad breath. Not the "I had onions for lunch and it'll be gone tomorrow" kind of breath.

And periodontal disease left undiagnosed and untreated will only get worse and over time it will lead to gum tissue shrinking away from the teeth, bone loss and eventually tooth loss....not to mention the social consequences of "dragon breath" created by periodontal bacteria. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT to see a dentist who can accurately and thoroughly examine all your teeth and gums and give you a proper diagnosis. Once you KNOW you have periodontal disease, then you can begin the therapy that will help heal this disease. Make sure your dentist and hygienist are thoroughly probing all your teeth to check for pockets between your teeth and gums.

What is a dental spa?

"What is a dental spa?" - I was recently in a local coffee shop buying my urgently needed morning cup of coffee and wearing my uniform, which has the "MoreSmiles Dental Spa" logo. One of the other customers approached me and asked what a dental spa was? I explained to her that a dental spa was a place where patients could be assured of having their comforts as well as their needs met. Most everyone has some trepidation when coming in for dental appointments, but our patients can look forward to services which provide comfort and relaxation, such as warm paraffin hand therapy, smoothies, a coffee and cold drink station, etc. The coffee shop customer related that she did not have any of these amenities at her dentist and asked for one of our business cards, which I was happy to provide. Immediately, two other people requested one. So now we all know what a dental spa is and why it has appeal?
