Holiday Stress and TMJ

Whether you're cooking for a family of 25, traveling to eat at someone else's table, negotiating holiday mall traffic, or making your list and checking it twice, our wonderful, beautiful, magical holiday season can present its own set of challenges.

Headaches, jaw fatigue, tingling or numbness, neck pain, and upper neck and shoulder tension, can be a side effect of a bit too much holiday preparation. These are symptoms that we see increased when patients are faced with higher levels of stress, tension, anxiety and pressure. In these circumstances, people tend to clench and grind their teeth more than usual, and this can lead to aggravated TMJ's - or jaw joints.

Here are a few tips to take some pressure off your TMJ and perhaps avoid the headaches and neck and muscle pain associated with TMJ disorder:
-avoid chewing gum
-sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees
-make a habit to relax your lower jaw and let it hang - for instance, every time you stop at a red light take note of your jaw's position and make sure the muscles are not tight
-place your thumb inside your mouth and gently massage the massiter muscle behind your back teeth
-practice good posture
When you can't control TMJ symptoms on your own, you feel you're not getting any better, or you can't tolerate the pain any longer, it may be time to consider neuromuscular, non-surgical treatment in our office. Our unique and proven effective approach is not available anywhere else in the metro New Orleans area.
